Attractions in the Ruhengeri Region / Kinigi are famed for being the home path for almost half of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas. Kinigi, located at the foot of the Virunga Mountains, has breathtaking surroundings that make it a popular tourist destination.
The location is so ideal that one may stay for several days and enjoy various hikes while learning about Rwanda’s culture. Volcanoes National Park has some unusual attractions, such as gorillas.

The first noticeable drop in temperature is noted as you travel around the undulating curves of the asphalt road going to Kinigi. The more you travel inland, the colder it becomes.
As you approach the city, you can see the Volcanoes National Park, but the highest point, the Virunga Mountains, consisting of three active volcanoes in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), stands out.
“This site is quite lovely; there are numerous tourist attractions here, and the hilly terrain also allows you to widen your perspective of neighboring Uganda and the Congo,” says John Collins, an Australian traveler.
He is amazed that this is a tour of the Kinigi region where he may observe amazing wildlife such as primates and birds.
Collins claims that enthusiasm cannot be articulated; it must just be experienced. “It’s one among the highlights of every African journey because witnessing these gentle giants is a great moment in any African vacation,” he adds.
Kinigi is also densely packed with traditional hotels and stopovers that add to the overall appeal of the journey.
According to Paul Muvunyi, shareholder of Akagera Game Lodge and proprietor of Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, guests are happy when they can acquire a choice of delicacies. “I’ve seen that tourists remain longer once they have what they want to eat,” he remarked.
Another incentive in the region, according to the hotel magnate, is receiving tourists pleasantly and generously.
Kinigi is most likely the only spot where visitors may easily approach the remains of the Karisoke Research Station, the burial site of Dian Fossey, an American naturalist who was slain while conducting a detailed study on gorilla conservation in the region.
Beyond there, there is the Volcanoes National Park, one of Rwanda’s most famous places, where mountain gorilla monitoring is carried out on an international scale.
The park covers around 13,000 hectares and is home to the recently naturalized golden monkey, a little-known endangered species.
The golden monkey has a gold body with black limbs, tail, and crown. It was earlier discovered in Nyungwe Forest in southern Rwanda, but Volcanoes National Park presently has the only viable population.
Some people believe that viewing the golden monkey is a must-do, but it is a very different experience than seeing the gorillas. where the visitor may get up and personal with them. Researchers have just recently begun to get a clear picture of their lifestyle and habits.
The Golden Monkeys, who dwell mostly in bamboo thickets and are smaller and harder to notice, are a great setting for these creatures to persist, according to Prosper Uwingeri, the park’s head warden.
He believes Rwanda is fortunate since Kinigi is one of the only areas where these primates were spared from extinction when there was still time. According to Uwingeri Another aspect that distinguishes Kinigi as a model tourism town is the presence of more than 200 bird species thought to reside in the forest.
Gorilla tourism was most likely Rwanda’s principal source of foreign cash in the early 1990s. This came to an abrupt halt in 1994 during the Tutsi massacre. Gorilla trekking resumed permanently in 1999.
Only approximately 600 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, with almost half of them living within a few meters from Kinigi Town. The majority of the day is spent inside the gorilla field, and seeing these global attractions does not need much effort; simply be in the Ruhengeri Kinigi zone.
